Natalie Randall, PhD student, applied mathematical and computationl sciences
Optimizes energy systems
Hometown: Delray Beach, Florida
Faculty mentor: Beste Basciftci, PhD, assistant professor, Department of Business Analytics, Tippie College of Business
Degree program and anticipated graduation date: PhD in applied mathematical and computational sciences, Summer 2025
Natalie Randall designs schedules for power grids that balance keeping electricity costs low while ensuring that the grid is strong enough to manage unexpected failures. She also explores how wind energy can be integrated as a renewable resource, along with storage units, to make power grids more efficient and resilient while reducing pollution. She creates models to predict and optimize how these changes would work, incorporating any risks and uncertainties. The challenges Randall explores have real-world significance and directly impact people’s everyday lives.
After graduation, Randall hopes to pursue a career where she can use the knowledge that she has gained during her time at the University of Iowa.
