During painful medical procedures, effective distraction can help ease children’s pain and distress. Ann Marie McCarthy studies pain intervention techniques, and she is currently working with a team to develop a computer application that will help clinicians identify parents that are able to provide effective distraction, tailor the intervention based on parent and child characteristics, and ultimately provide the distraction to promote children’s well-being during medical procedures.
