When racial tensions boiled over in a flurry of violence, looting, vandalism, and arrests in Ferguson, Mo., in 2014, the public sought to understand why. Many turned to Colin Gordon. Gordon studies the history of American public policy and political economy. His research on demographic shifts in St. Louis, including interactive maps that visualize patterns of racial segregation and migration, proved to be a valuable resource in understanding the roots of the violence. Gordon is a senior research consultant at the Iowa Policy Project and has written or co-written reports on health coverage, economic development, and wages and working conditions.
