As a world-renowned leader in diabetes research and the inaugural director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center, E. Dale Abel has made it his mission to put together a diverse team of talented researchers committed to helping improve the health of the millions of people in the United States and the world with diabetes. He is internationally recognized for his research on the molecular mechanisms responsible for heart failure in obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and Type 1 diabetes, and for studies on the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the development of insulin resistance, obesity, and its complications. In October 2015 Abel was elected to the National Academy of Medicine; and was recently named chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, effective Jan. 1, 2016.
