Determines health impacts of heat
Hometown: Kenosha, Wisconsin
Faculty mentor: Hans-Joachim Lehmler, PhD, professor, Department of Occupational and Environmental Health, College of Public Health
Laura Dean investigates how extreme heat can impact human biological systems, particularly the biological processes underlying asthma. Her work reveals the mechanisms through which extreme heat exacerbates asthma symptoms. Heat waves are becoming more frequent, intense, and longer-lasting, posing serious risks to public health. Heat can cause heatstroke, and dehydration, exacerbating chronic conditions, including asthma. Older adults, children, pregnant women, and those with pre-existing health conditions are the most vulnerable to these effects. Dean’s research could inform more effective strategies to safeguard human health.
Dean received her PhD in the Human Toxicology Program in the College of Public Health before entering her postdoctoral position. She hopes to become a professor to continue researching, mentoring, and teaching.
