Dare to Predict Behavior

Joyce E. Berg

Appointment(s):

Director, Iowa Electronic Markets
Sidney G. Winter Professor of Accounting

College(s): Business

The Iowa Electronic Markets (IEM) has a history of accurately forecasting election results, and according to research by Joyce Berg and her colleagues, it is well guarded against long-term manipulation. Berg is the director of the IEM, a real money market where traders can invest up to $500 buying and selling contracts based on what they think the result of an election will be. The market has predicted the final vote percentage for the two major party candidates within an average margin of 1.13 percentage points. Berg also directs the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which provides free tax preparation services to more than 1,000 clients annually, and Tippie Build, a collaboration between the college and Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity to construct affordable housing. To date, students have raised more than $300,000 and contributed to the building of eight homes.
