Identifies barriers to dental care
• What is your area of research or scholarship? My work is focused on the effects of health care reform on overall health, dental health, and access to care, as well as dental workforce trends in Iowa.
• In simple terms, why does this research matter? Many oral diseases can be prevented with routine dental care; however, millions face barriers to adequate oral care. My research helps to shed light on these barriers in accessing dental care, with the ultimate goal of improving access to care.
• What is your degree program and expected graduate date? I am currently working towards a Ph.D. in Oral Sciences with an emphasis on Dental Public Health and Health Policy, and expected to graduate in 2021.
• Hometown: Algona, IA
• Faculty mentor/advisor: Dr. Susan McKernan, DMD, MS, Ph.D.
What are your career goals? After graduation, I hope to continue my work in research and instructing dental and dental hygiene students.
