Radiation and chemotherapy can damage any patient’s body, but those of young children are especially vulnerable. That’s why pediatric cancer researcher Yatin Vyas and his colleagues in the division are working to develop treatments that would directly target individual cancer cells, without sending radiation or chemotherapy to the entire region. By taking a closer look at a person’s own cancer cells and treating them according to their individual genetic makeup, his team of doctors hopes medicine can one day cure cancer with a simple pill. Vyas was named the Mary Joy and Jerre Stead Professor of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the Carver College of Medicine in 2013 and has been a leading pediatric cancer researcher across the country for more than 20 years.
