While many treat cleft palates, Azeez Butali is exploring innovative ways to prevent them. His genetic study of non-syndromic clefts in people of African descent is funded through a grant from the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research. Butali also directs the African Craniofacial Anomalies Network, a collaboration between scientists in Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, and Rwanda.
