We learn best when we learn by doing. Jon Garfinkel has implemented this philosophy by “flipping” his classroom. Students watch lectures online, then come to class to apply the skills gleaned from the lecture on projects (using real company data) done in teams. This experiential learning model allows students to practice technical skills on messy real-world data, while developing “soft skills” of collaboration and communication with a diverse group of team members. In this way, Garfinkel’s classroom models the business world and provides students with an education that will set them up for future success.
