Dare to End Alcoholism
Paul Gilbert, Ph.D., Sc.M.

Research has shown that stress can lead to problem drinking. Given that discrimination is a stressor, Paul Gilbert was curious: is there evidence that discrimination-whether based on race, gender, religion, age, disability or sexual orientation-can lead to problem drinking as well? Combing through the quantitative data in 97 peer-reviewed, published research papers, Gilbert was able to show a link between discrimination and heavy and hazardous drinking, and opened a new line of academic inquiry that could inform future public policy and public health decisions.
