Dental implants are sometimes necessary for patients interested in replacing missing natural teeth. However, bone and soft tissue augmentation procedures are often required prior to or during the implant placement to provide an adequate support for the implants or for aesthetic reasons. Gustavo Avila Ortiz is working to evaluate the efficacy of therapeutic strategies to prevent alveolar ridge resorption after tooth loss, as well as to improve understanding about the healing dynamics of the alveolar bone and mucosal tissue following implant site development techniques based on individual patient features. In 2015, he received a grant to study the efficacy of two different surgical approaches to increase the thickness of mucosa in dental implants.
