Building community starts with knowing your neighbor’s name. As curriculum coordinator with the Confucius Institute, Ma began a simple yet innovative ongoing workshop to teach UI professors, staff and students how to pronounce Chinese students’ names. She also serves as a liaison with visiting Chinese scholars and helps with standardizing curriculum, developing teaching materials and designing new courses. Ma is also a UI ambassador to the surrounding K-12 community, designing classes and workshops related to China for students, and teaching high school Chinese language classes.
