Preeclampsia, a life-threatening pregnancy-related high blood pressure disorder, has plagued women for centuries. Thanks to thousands of women who donated blood and tissue samples to the UI Women’s Health Tissue Repository, Donna Santillan and her research collaborators were finally able to shed a pin prick of light on the ancient malady. They discovered a biomarker that serves as an early warning flag that preeclampsia is likely to develop alerting providers to more closely monitor those patients, and opening the door to future research to treat and prevent preeclampsia.
