We often take clean air for granted. Or we do until smoke from forest fires, trapped vehicle smoke or industrial pollution make it hard to breath, our eyes burn, and force us to curtail our normal routines. Historically the river communities of eastern Iowa and Western Illinois have unhealthy air during some portions of the year. As project director of CLE4R, a collaborative effort between the University of Iowa, the City of Dubuque, and Dubuque-area partners to improve air quality in Dubuque and the surrounding Upper Mississippi River Valley communities, Charles Stanier is leading a grassroots effort to improve community health and attract increased economic development to the area using technology and education.
