John D’Agata pushes the boundaries of the essay in the classroom and in his anthology series A New History of the Essay, which includes The Making of the American Essay published in 2016. The director of Iowa’s Nonfiction Writing Program has resurrected the essay and initiated a vigorous conversation on the often-overlooked literary form. His work has been supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Howard Foundation Fellowship, an NEA Literature Fellowship, and a Lannan Foundation Fellowship.
