Responding to the woeful lack of central, complex theatre roles for females, in 2010 MacVey led the establishment of a series of commissions through the Big Ten Theatre Consortium to support female playwrights and take concrete steps to offer young female theatre students something besides middle-aged Lady MacBeth. An accomplished playwright, director and actor, MacVey is a fellow in the College of Fellows of the American Theatre and Past President of the National Association of Schools of Theatre. He is chair of the Theatre Arts Department, director of the Division of Performing Arts, and chair of the UI Arts Advancement Committee. MacVey also is a recipient of the Regents Award for Faculty Excellence and is a Collegiate Fellow in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. In 2014, he delivered the University of Iowa Presidential Lecture.
